ArtDeCodex 0.3b Released

posted Sunday, August 26, 2007 - 12:32 PM EDT

Album art fans take note, MachineCodex has released ArtDeCodex 0.3b for Mac OS X. This handy application allows you to decode the album art embedded in iTunes 7 .itc files into standard PNG or JPEG files that can be used outside of iTunes.

Prior to iTunes 7 and coverflow, these artwork files were stored as id3 data. Since coverflow was introduced in iTunes 7, Apple has adopted the opaque and largely unreadable .itc format for files in the ~/Music/iTunes/AlbumArtwork folder.

ArtDeCodex requires Mac OS X v10.4 and iTunes 7.

New in this release:

  • User interface improvements

Another iPhone Unlock Story: This Time Done With Software!

posted Friday, August 24, 2007 - 07:32 PM EDT

Ok, these guys might've beat George Hotz to it - we're not quite sure yet. But we're anxious to report that on the heels of the news that the iPhone was unlocked to run on non-AT&T networks by way of software and a soldering iron, the six-man iPhoneSIMfree.com team has managed to do the same...but with software alone - no need to crack open an iPhone. A rather more appealing proposition, it is.

Just as with our previous story of Hotz's efforts, this hack does not preserve Visual Voicemail functionality, an AT&T-specific feature.

See the Engadget story for detailed notes on the procedure as well as a video showing the process in action.

iPhone Hacks
iPhone Unlocked, Running On T-Mobile Network

posted Friday, August 24, 2007 - 07:11 PM EDT

iPhone hackers bow down to 17-year-old George Hotz of Glen Rock, NJ. George confirmed today that he has broken the lock tying the iPhone to AT&T's cellular network and is using it on the T-Mobile network. He's even provided a video showing the iPhone displaying "T-Mobile" as the carrier.

The hack worked by Hotz is detailed on his blog and involves the use of not only various software tools but also a soldering iron, making it clearly not a procedure for the feint of heart. Though Hotz, himself, spent about 500 hours on this project since acquiring his iPod on June 29, he estimates that working the hack as described on his website should take about 2 hours for the tech-savvy user looking to roll up his/her sleeves and give it a go.

All iPhone features except AT&T's Visual Voicemail remain intact on an iPhone hacked in this manner, working on the T-Mobile network..

Will a small industry pop up to but iPhones and unlock them for resale? Hotz says he hopes not, "I don't want people making money off this." Will Apple alter the iPhone to render this hack impossible to perform? Will the DMCA be used to block the execution of this hack, as it has been used to combat "mod-chipping" of game consoles? Time will tell.

See a video interview with Hotz discussing his achievement.

Photos Of Upcoming iPod Nanos?

posted Wednesday, August 22, 2007 - 02:38 PM EDT

9to5Mac has posted what are allegedly photos of the upcoming iPod nano. The units depicted in the photos are consistent with earlier rumors - basically shorter iPod nanos, close to a current nano with nearly all of the space between the clickwheel and the screen removed.

The picturd unitst appear to feature more "rounding" towards the top and bottom of the front face as compared to the current nanos.

See the original story for more images of the units in various colors.

Apple iPhone Update 1.0.2 Released

posted Wednesday, August 22, 2007 - 02:01 PM EDT

Apple has released iPhone Update 1.0.2 through iTunes.

This update includes various unnamed "bug fixes" and is a 3.7MB download.

Users who have "hacked" their iPhone may experience problems with this update; a restore to factory default may be necessary.

Certain users, myself included, have noticed increased Safari + iPod stability with this latest update. Your mileage may vary.
